Alexander Kargaltsev (1985) is een kunstenaar, schrijver, fotograaf, acteur en filmregisseur. In deze laatste categorie won hij vele prijzen, o.a. voor zijn korte films The Cell (2010) en The Well (2009), beide gemaakt toen hij studeerde aan de All-Russian State University of Cinematography in Moskou.

Fotografie is al sinds zijn jeugd zijn passie en hij heeft al een opmerkelijk oeuvre opgebouwd. In eerste instantie werkte hij in Rusland met zijn vrienden als modellen, met als beste werk een aantal stills uit zijn films.

Als openlijk homoseksuele man die aan vervolging in zijn eigen land had geleden, had Kargaltsev geen andere keuze dan te vluchten en asiel aan te vragen in de Verenigde Staten. Nadat hem in 2011 asiel was verleend, gaf hij vele interviews aan talloze Amerikaanse en Russische kranten en tijdschriften.

Het activisme van de kunstenaar en zijn kunstprojecten - zoals de serie "Asylum" - blijven internationaal aandacht vragen voor de hachelijke situatie van seksuele minderheden in Rusland en hij blijft hulp bieden aan degenen die bang zijn voor terugkeer naar Rusland door hen te informeren over de mogelijkheiden om in de vrije wereld een veilig toevluchtsoord te vinden.
