Deze oneliner slingerde de Amerikaanse kunstenaar Barnett Newman ooit in het gezicht van zijn landgenote, de filosofe Susanne Langer. Newman is nu nog steeds een grote naam. Langer helaas niet.
Dit boek toont waarom dat onterecht is. Voor het eerst brengt het een aantal van haar essays in Nederlandse vertaling samen. Susanne Langer (geb. Knauth) was de eerste denker van de analytische school die ernstig aandacht had voor de filosofie van de kunst. Met name haar ideeën over muziekfilosofie zijn nog steeds baanbrekend.
Langer wil een gedegen antwoord bieden op de nogal oppervlakkige uitspraak van Barnett Newman. Ja, kunst is wel degelijk een vorm van symbolisch denken. Maar ze functioneert helemaal anders dan taal.
