Fik Van Gestel (°Turnhout, 1951. Woont en werkt in Gierle) maakte in de jaren tachtig deel uit van een groep schilders die 'de nieuwe expressieve schilders' genoemd werden (samen met Marc Maet, Karel Dierickx, Philippe Vandenberg e.a.). Zij brachten in navolging van de Italiaanse Transavanguardia de schilderkunst weer in de aandacht na een periode waarin die door de conceptuele kunst wat naar de achtergrond verdrongen was. Recent heeft Van Gestel duidelijk een tweede adem gevonden met zijn schilderijen die overlopen van licht.
