Tussen 1817 en 1885 bracht de Koninklijke Marine een omvangrijke collectie schaalmodellen bijeen: de Marinemodellenkamer. Deze bijna 1600 modellen van schepen, havenwerken, machines, vuurtorens, instrumenten, geschut en andere constructies, die op uitzonderlijke wijze Nederlands maritieme verleden portretteren, bevinden zich thans in het Rijksmuseum te Amsterdam. De deels uit de 18e eeuw stammende modellen belichaamden niet alleen het technologisch verleden van de Marine , maar speelden ook een belangrijke rol in het dagelijks technologiebeleid: het waren visuele hulpmiddelen voor de uitvinder, bijlagen van reisverslagen, instructiemiddelen voor de opleiding van officieren en hoogstandjes van modelbouw die op de 19e eeuwse wereldtentoonstellingen een belangrijke wervende en inspirerende functie vervulden.
