Millennialang is India een ontmoetingsplaats geweest. Beschavingen, vorstendommen en keizerrijken wisselden er elkaar af. Romeinse, Arabische en Chinese kooplieden werden aangetrokken door de lokale markten. Turkische, Perzische en Europese volkeren oefenden er politieke controle uit. Hij studeerde zes jaar aan drie Indiase universiteiten en reisde in zijn loopbaan ongeveer 65 keer naar India. Aan de K.U.Leuven doceert hij vakken als Hindoeïsme en Sanskriet. Hij publiceerde meer dan dertig boeken over het land en de cultuur, en legde in 2009, na veertien jaar werk, de laatste hand aan het 2241 bladzijden tellende The Bhakti Hindi English Dictionary. IDESBALD GODDEERIS is slavist en historicus en doceert over imperiale en transnationale geschiedenis aan de K.U.Leuven. Hij is er verbonden aan de onderzoekseenheid MoSa (Moderniteit & Samenleving 1800-2000) en is senior member van het Leuven Centre for Global Governance Studies. In 2009 was hij onder meer visiting fellow aan de London School of Economics en aan de University of Delhi.
