El Eutidemo es un diálogo irritante, porque resulta imposible afirmar claramente cuál sea su tema. De un lado, la obra se ocupa de problemas asociados con la virtud y con la vida buena. De otro, ello queda opacado por largos pasajes en los que Platón se mofa de las incongruencias de los protagonistas, los hermanos Eutidemo y Dionisodoro. Éstos, al igual que Sócrates, afirman estar preocupados por la virtud; pero traen a colación una falacia tras otra, algunas francamente grotescas. En el Eutidemo, Platón hace gala de dotes cómicas que no nos esperaríamos de él: un humor y una burla desbordantes, junto a una ironía tremenda, al grado de que el asombrado lector se ríe más de una vez. Al mismo tiempo critica la eurística exagerada y burda que usan los hermanos para refutar "lo que siempre se diga, igual si es verdadero o falso". El Eutidemo ha sido tan relevante, que incluso el mismo Aristóteles, alumno de Platón, se inspiró en él para comentar algunas falacias en sus Refutaciones sofísticas.
