The group was created in 1996 by head composer and keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen, guitar player Emppu Vuorinen, and head vocalist Tarja Turunen. The group shortly selected up drum player Jukka Nevalainen, and then bassist Sami Vänskä following the discharge of its first public appearance collection, Angels Fall First (1997). In 2002, Vänskä was substituted by Marco Hietala, whoever as well took over the masculine singer part formerly packed by Holopainen either visitor vocalists.
