To consider the whole issue of behaviour management, the author believes we need to look at the way we approach different aspects of behaviour and specifically our attitude to rewarding good behaviour. Confidence is everything; it allows the teacher to deliver the curriculum and the student to flourish and become independent. Teachers have to empower themselves and allow appropriate behaviour to be elevated so that the disruptive behaviour is sidelined. We must not allow disaffected behaviour to take up a disproportionate share of our energy and resources. This is easier said than done, some might say, but it is important not to compromise on what climate we wish to prevail in the classroom. It has almost become an accepted practice to reward disruptive students who attempt to improve their performance, no matter how flimsy the progress. Yet the model student is taken for granted. Surely the approach has to be right for the full range of students if we are seriously trying to create a positive learning environment for everybody. The system seeks to understand the roots of indiscipline to the extent that it becomes difficult for some schools to raise expectations. It is true that the school community has to understand the roots of a child's disciplinary problems, but not at the expense of the wider school community. We should be moulding excellence based on the model students. There are so many of these students even in the most difficult of schools. All students need to know is if they act appropriately they will receive the same rewards as others; if they act inappropriately the consequnces consequnces will be ordered and exact. When a fair and supportive regime is not in place, learning for well behaved students can be badly damaged. It is when inclusion is designed at the expense of the well behaved students' education that parents grow concerned. The fact that the student with behavioural difficulties undergoing inclusion may successfully develop over time to participate in lessons cannot excuse two terms of interrupted learning for the rest of the class. I have always seen the main aim of teaching as creating the culture for learning. The experience of schooling should be an ever lasting memory for all those involved in teaching and learning. This is where students should feel good about themselves, teachers should enjoy teaching and parents should take pride in their child's progress. Success is everything and everything is possible.
