The renowned French historian Emmanuel Le Roy Ladurie explores the roots and development of a popular tale of witchcraft accusations, retold in 1840 by the Gascon poet Jacques Boe or "Jasmin'', published simultaneously in Occitan and French between 1840 en 1842. The starting-point of this book is a forgotten narrative poem about Francouneto, the heroine of the poem, a village witch, whose presence brings destruction and infertility.. Jasmin, wigmaker, hairdresser, poet of the poor, collected this story from oral tradition and placed it in the sixteenth century. Professor Le Roy Ladurie examines the evidence and demonstrates beyond question that Francouneto was a real person who lived a century later, at the time of the last witchcraft trials in Gascony.
