En net zoals in Galli is het leven in de Romeinse garnizoenen in die regios geen makkie. Asterix moet ook Obelix duidelijk maken dat er niet alleen Romeinen zijn in Itali.

Asterix en Obelix liepen al vaker rond in Rome maar de streek rond die antieke wereldstad vormt dus een groter decor. Volgens de nieuwe scenarist Jean-Yves Ferri werden er nog nooit zoveel nieuwe personages opgevoerd als in dit album.

Er worden dan ook heel wat streken aangedaan tijdens hun reis van het noorden naar het zuiden van de laars. De eerste druk van het album dat in twintig talen verschijnt kent een voorzichtige oplage van meer dan 4 miljoen exemplaren.

Het vorige kende een eerste oplage van 5 miljoen exemplaren. .
