Ronny Moortgat werd in 1951 geboren te Niel aan de oever van de Rupel.
Hij groeide op in Schelle aan de samenvloeiing van Rupel en Schelde. Reeds zeer vroeg ontwikkelde hij een passie voor het tekenen en schilderen van maritieme onderwerpen. De aanleiding daartoe vormt wellicht zijn familiale achter­grond: binnenschippers aan moeders kant en zijn vader die werkzaam was op de locale scheepswerf in Schelle. Thuis was het motto: “Eerst een diploma behalen om de kost te verdienen.” Vandaar dat Ronny een opleiding volgde tot technisch tekenaar; een professie die hij jarenlang uitoefende.
Later zette hij door om “de knepen van het artistieke” onder de knie te krijgen: hij ging zes jaar tekenen en schilderen aan de kunstacademie van Hoboken.
“Een prachtige tijd!” aldus Ronny. “Het water fascineert mij. In mijn vrije tijd ga
ik graag, met vrienden, zeilen op de Nederlandse binnenwateren of aan de Belgische kust.”
Moortgat is inmiddels een internationaal gerenommeerd kunstenaar.
Hij is Lid van de Royal Society of Maritime Artists in Londen.

Ronny Moortgat was born in 1951 in the Belgian village of Niel, which is near Antwerp. Niel is situated on the Northern bank of the river Rupel. He grew up in the adjacent Flanders village of Schelle - where the Rupel meets the river Scheldt. In those years he developed his passion for drawing and painting maritime scenes. The roots of his interest in maritime art probably stem from his family background: his mother’s side knew several river barge men whereas his father was involved in the local shipbuilding industry. His parents insisted on Ronny first getting a school diploma that would earn him a decent living. Young Moortgat followed an education path to be a technical draughtsman; a profession he practiced for many years. Thereafter he decided to go to Hoboken’s art academy, where for six years he was submerged in all the noble artisan’s professional tricks of drawing and painting, etching and printing. “A wonderful time that was!” says Ronny. “The water has always fascinated me. In my spare time I enjoy sailing on the inland waterways of Holland and around the channel coast.” Moortgat is by now an internationally renowned artist. He is Member of the Royal Society of Maritime Artists in London.
