Er wordt wel eens gezegd dat Charles de Gaulle tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog Europa heeft gered van de Geallieerden. Zeker is dat hij voor Europa op de bres heeft gestaan. Hij vond dat Frankrijk weer een grote mogendheid moest worden en tijdens de oorlog raakte hij er van overtuigd dat er ook nog een rol moest en kon zijn voor Europa. Hij pleitte hiervoor in Londen, Washington en Moskou. Veel steun kreeg hij niet. Niet in Frankrijk en de andere Europese staten, en niet daarbuiten. Toch kwam rond 1950 - De Gaulle was toen al weg - Europese samenwerking op gang, maar anders dan hij voor ogen had. Het beeld van De Gaulle als arrogante, conservatieve, anti-Britse en anti-Amerikaanse politicus die vond dat Frankrijk de baas moest zijn in Europa, zal men na het lezen van dit boek moeten nuanceren.
